A delightful and exceptionally rare Georgian travelling solitaire box, circa 1822–1830, featuring a hand-painted depiction of Brighton Chain Pier on the lid. This charming souvenir captures the elegance of the Regency era, with figures dressed in period fashion adorning the front.
Crafted from pale sycamore or holly wood, the box showcases the most fantastic patina and craquelure — the characteristic crazing of the Copal Resin varnish that Georgians applied for a high-gloss finish. Over nearly two centuries, the surface has developed a beautifully faded, yellowed appearance through oxidation, lending an opulent vintage character.
A fine penwork border frames the lid's edge, while the interior reveals the genius of its original purpose: game instructions are printed on the lid, base, and underneath, allowing players to enjoy solitaire whilst travelling. These pocket games rarely survived their era of frequent use, making intact examples highly sought after.
Measures 16 cm × 8 cm with a depth of 2.5 cm. No game pieces included. Condition reflects age and use, with worn varnish and scuffed labels visible — authentic signs of its Georgian heritage. An exceptional collector's piece and a window into Regency leisure culture.
